Finns compound 94 % of all population of the country. In Finland lives also nearby 300  thousand Swedes. The Swedish population predominates over Finnish only on the Aland islands which have been had in gulf of Bothnia, approximately in the middle between shores of Finland and Sweden. In spite of the fact that the Swedish population is not numerous, Swedes use a wide cultural autonomy in Finland and their tongue is declared by state on a level with Finnish. In the extreme north of the country, in Lapland, there lives a national minority - saamy. Here the special Lappish district with a local government is created. On confession the majority of Finns - lutherans.
